Death threats against journalists behind FOI based research

Slovenian Journalists Blaz Zgaga and Matej Surc received death threats after having reported about illegal arms trade during the Balkan wars

The research was based upon 6000 pages of documents received through a freedom of information request under Slovenian law.

The results are published in a trilogy of books in Slovenia and in articles in the neighbouring countries, where they teamed up with Sasa Lekovic in Croatia and Esad Hecimovic from Bosnia.

The first book was published in June, the second book and the articles in Croatia and Bosnia in September and October and the third book is scheduled for 2012. Summaries of the story were published on the website 100r.org and on the Euobserver.

The South East European Media Organisation condemns the threats.

The team of journalists received research grants from Journalismfund.eu and from Scoop.
